Laser Hair Removal Top 10 Questions
Here are our Qutis Clinics top 10 frequently asked questions about Laser Hair Removal and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). Laser and IPL are both used for hair removal and other treatments. We commonly use laser for upper lip hair removal, chin hair removal, arm hair removal, underarm hair removal leg and bikini line hair removal. Treatments are popular at this time of year as people are planning holidays and their skin has not had any sun and so is suitable for treatment.
1. What is the difference between IPL and laser?
The main difference between IPL and laser is how the light, heat, and energy is delivered; Laser delivers a direct energy, whereas IPL delivers a broad spectrum of light which is dispersed over a larger area. Both treatments are effective and will offer good results at Qutis we favour laser hair removal for most customers.
2. Is the treatment uncomfortable?
The treatment is no more painful than waxing in fact many say much less uncomfortable. At Qutis (which includes MBNS) we aim to make treatments as comfortable and as effective as possible. It is important the we get the balance right by treating all our customers as individuals. During treatment your practitioner will endeavour to make you as comfortable as possible, we will apply a cool gel to the skin before treatment and often have cold air blowing directly on the skin during treatment. Many of our clinics have a laser with a chilled treatment head, which feels cool on contact with the skin.
3. Is laser hair removal permanent?
Hair removal lasers have been in use since 1997 and have been approved (by FDA) for “permanent hair reduction”. Under this definition, “permanent” hair reduction is the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing after a treatment regime. Once your treatment course is complete all the hair follicles that have been treated have been permanently killed and will not return. This is normally around 20% of the hair present during any one treatment. We recommend a course of 6 laser hair removal treatments for the fullest removal. Prices for laser removal are shown by treatment area for single and blocks of six treatment. For multiple areas especially large areas such as male back contact your nearest clinic for combination price discounts.
4. When can I have laser hair removal?
The best time for a female to have treatment is just after her menstrual cycle; if recently waxed or plucked we would recommend waiting 2-3 weeks before your first Laser hair removal treatment. Many customers just reach a point where they are fed-up with constant waxing and just wish to have the hair removed for good!
5. Can I have laser hair removal if I’m pregnant?
There have been no clinical studies to prove that Laser Hair Removal may have side effects to pregnant or breastfeeding women, however there have been no studies to say treatment is safe during pregnancy either. Because of this Qutis practices on the cautious side and does not treat pregnant or breastfeeding women. Patient safety is always our first concern.
6. What do I do between laser hair removal treatments?
We request that patients do not remove the hairs between treatments, for example no waxing, plucking or hair removal creams. Trimming or shaving is the best way to maintain your hair growth during your treatment cycle. Removing the hair follicle by the root during your treatment course will upset the hair growth cycle and could result in more treatments being required for an effective outcome.
7. Does laser hair removal work on light coloured hair?
Dark hair absorbs more light and heat and is easier to treat, but as long as there is some pigmentation and colour in the hair follicle, the laser hair removal will be successful. Our IPL & Laser Hair Removal machines accommodate for every skin type. During consultation your practitioner will confirm the exact results you can expect to achieve.
8. Are there any risks involved?
It is important to visit a clinic which is led by healthcare professionals with expert training and experience behind them. Our treatments are performed by experienced nurses and trained laser specialists. There are some minor risks that other dark areas on the skin surface will attract light and heat, your specialist will explain all this during consultation.
9. When can I have laser hair removal?
The only guidelines for Laser Hair Removal are; you cannot have an active suntan or be wearing any fake tan. You cannot be currently taking any medication or herbal pills that cause photosensitivity (for example St. John’s Wart), and you cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding.
10. How much does it cost?
Treatment prices vary depending on the area the patient wishes to have treated, Qutis is competitively priced and we do offer discounts on treatment packages. We use some of the best Laser machines available and which offer maximum results. The benefit of this is that fewer laser hair removal treatments will be required for complete hair removal.
