What is LED Light Therapy and Why is it Good For Your Skin?

LED light therapy is used to treat all kinds of skin problems, including acne, and to reduce scarring. Light in a particular wavelength (which varies according to what is being treated) is shone directly onto the skin for about thirty minutes. It is generally considered safe and has no side effects when administered properly.

The light frequencies chosen are UV free, so will not increase your risk of skin cancer.

Red light is used to improve the overall appearance of the skin - reducing lines and wrinkles, reducing pore size, etc. It works by encouraging the skin to produce adenosine triphosphate, which then produces collagen and elastin - the substances that make your skin look good and help it heal respectively.

Blue light is used to kill bacteria, reducing breakouts and adult acne. Infrared is sometimes used for deep healing and to improve the appearance of scars.

The treatments feel a lot like sunbathing (and thus can also improve mood if it's the middle of winter). There is no associated downtime - and no messing around with facial masks and other stuff which some people can find disturbing or even disgusting. Some clinics also use a gel that encourages the light to penetrate further into the skin. It is often used in conjunction with other treatments such as HydraFacials, or post-procedure to reduce redness, swelling and bruising.

The Qutis practitioner or dermatologist may also recommend nutritional improvements if your skin appears to be unhealthy.

People with mostly undamaged skin gain a benefit from just treatment, but many people, especially if older, need multiple sessions to see full results. Sun damage and other marks can take longer to resolve.

Results are also not instant - it generally takes a day or two to actually see an improvement in your skin, Because there are no chemicals involved there is no risk of having the dreaded bad reaction to a product, either. If you have an actual skin condition, you should check with your dermatologist before getting an LED phototherapy treatment.

LED Phototherapy treatment should be avoided if you have a medical condition that makes your skin sensitive to light (photodermatitis) - this includes eczema, lupus, pellagra and certain medications. If in doubt, check with your doctor.

Most people can, however, benefit from LED light therapy, which is sometimes referred to as an "LED mask" or "LED phototherapy." It is mostly applied to the face, but can also be used on other parts of the body. It can help reduce scarring from an injury (in this case, though, definitely talk to your dermatologist).

The results also tend to look more natural than a traditional facial - which can sometimes make this kind of therapy more appealing to men.

Be careful about your provider - some medical professionals recommend avoiding red light therapy provided by tanning salons, because they may not be careful about following instructions on duration.

A better choice is a high quality nurse led clinic like Qutis Clinics, which has nurses on staff. It is also possible to get the equipment to give yourself LED treatment at home, but bear in mind that home devices are less powerful and may not provide good results for people with damaged skin. If you do it at home, always follow the manufacturer's instructions in terms of duration and frequency. This is a cheaper option, but less likely to give the best results.

LED light therapy is safe for most people and beneficial to almost everyone who tries it. It works with the natural structure of your skin to promote health, plump your skin and give you a younger, healthier appearance. Because the treatments are quick and give no downtime, it is ideal for people with a busy schedule - or those who are preparing for a special occasion, such as their wedding, which is taking up a lot of time.
